Chautauqua Women’s Club Special Summer Gatherings 2009

Special Summer Gatherings 2009 offers you a season of entertainment to benefit the CWC scholarship fund and programs.  Our members and friends have opened their homes, streets, clubs, and other venues for your pleasure and learning experience.

This is your invitation to attend any or all of the marvelous events.  From brunch to fine dining to viewing the constellations or biking for pancakes, a number of fun, interesting events have been planned for your enjoyment. 

Each event is described below.  Select the date and event that peaks your interest and reserve your space now.  A reservation form follows the event descriptions.  Early reservations are recommended to ensure your choices.

 Oh That Sticky Wicket

Join others for a fun filled evening of heavy hors d'oeuvres and mild competition.  Enjoy a game of Croquet with instruction from Belleair Country Club Champion, Ed Garland.

No. 3 Japanese Ikebana With An American Flair
Friday, July 10               Time:  Noon
20 Park Avenue
Three types of Ikebana will be demonstrated, two for small or large open, rounded containers and one for a tall container.  Participants will try out their own designs with frogs/kenzan containers and flowers for a take home design.  A Japanese luncheon will be served.  Must be able to stand for 30 minutes.

No. 8 An Afternoon Japanese Tea Ceremony
Saturday, July 11           Time:  2-3:30 PM
Chautauqua Women’s Club
This is not a tea party but a highly sophisticated art form which was developed early in the 17th century.  Kuniko will explain the history and philosophy followed by the actual demonstration of the ceremony.  She will demonstrate how the kimono is dressed.  Taste Japanese cakes and green tea imported from Japan.  Each guest will leave with a small Japanese memento.

Bicycle to Clymer (21 miles each way) for pancakes at the Dutch Village Restaurant.  Non-riders join by car.  Rain date August 2 or as otherwise agreed.

President Tom and Jane Becker invite you to join them for a reception in the beautiful gardens of the President’s Cottage.  Take the opportunity to meet Harvard Medical School professor John Ratey, MD, a noted specialist in the study of autism and ADHD.  Good food, wine and conversation in a special place.
